A person/expert I admire

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to my blog. Today I am going to talk about Mary Richmond.

Mary Richmond is one of the most recognized pioneers in social work, her work and struggle for this profession is of total admiration, especially considering the levels of machismo and lack of resources existing at that time.

She was born on August 5, 1861 in Belleville, United States. Both her parents and siblings died so she had to move to Baltimore to live with her grandmother and aunts. Her grandmother was a great influence on her as she grew up idolizing her for her work as a radical activist who fought for women's suffrage as well as a feminist and spiritualist. From a young age, she lived in an environment of political, religious and other controversial discussions. This made her develop great critical skills and a caring attitude towards those in need. She also studied and read a lot from a very young age, which made her a self-taught and intellectual woman.

Her contribution to this profession is fundamental, since she theorized and systematized Social Work, revolutionized the way that existed until that moment to help the neediest people (charity) converting that help through theoretical and intervention bases, that attacked the root of the problem, into a profession.

This is very important for Social Work today because she was part of those admirable women who devoted themselves to the struggle for the recognition of Social Work as a discipline and profession like the rest of the social sciences.

Thank you for reading this far!
